The INSPIRE Awards is an annual event in our California region to recognize outstanding individuals who have inspired and served as role models in their community and to raise funds to benefit the Science from Scientists 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Meet our 2026 INSPIRE Awards Honorees

Wendy Young, PhD

Biotech Advisor and Board Director

Wendy is recognized for her 30+ years of contributions and dedication to medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. She currently serves on the boards and scientific advisory panels of public and private biotech companies and is a Senior Advisor at Google Ventures. Formerly the Senior Vice President of Small Molecule Drug Discovery at Genentech, she was instrumental in building a world-class drug discovery organization that delivered numerous drug candidates in oncology, immunology and infectious disease.

Timothy Chou, PhD

Founder

Timothy retired from Oracle Corporation as the first President of the cloud computing business. He returned to Stanford University in 2005 and started the first class on cloud computing, which has since featured guest lectures from more than 100 public company CEOs. In 2020, Timothy came out of retirement to pursue the Pediatric Moonshot, aligning his actions with the mantra he shares in his closing lectures: “To those much is given, much is expected.”

Asma Sharafi, PhD

Chief Technology Officer

Asma Sharafi is a clean-energy leader driven by a deep commitment to turning breakthrough innovations into real-world impact. With a background that includes leading PowerCo US as CEO and currently serving as Chief Technology Officer at Ensurge Micropower, Asma is recognized for building inclusive, high-performing teams and bridging the gap between technology and sustainable market solutions. She is passionate about mentoring future leaders and accelerating a more equitable energy future.

Rajiv Bhateja, PhD

Mayor

Rajiv currently serves as the Mayor of Los Altos Hills. Before committing to public service, Rajiv spent thirty years in the high tech industry, working at eight Silicon Valley startups and various public companies, finally retiring as VP of Engineering. Rajiv has volunteered and held leadership roles with various organizations including the Boy Scouts and public schools. He spent three weeks volunteering with the Missionaries of Charity (Kolkata, India). Rajiv grew up in Bangalore, India, and graduated from IIT, Bombay. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering and a Masters in Computer Science from UC, Berkeley. He lives in Los Altos Hills with his wife Meera. They have three adult sons, all Eagle Scouts.
